About the Book:

An inspirational Islamic book that will leave you feeling revived and hopeful that truly, with difficult always comes ease.

On Friday, August 16, 2013, twenty-six-year-old Amr Kassem attended a peaceful protest in Alexandria, Egypt along with thousands of others, rallying against the mass injustices taking place in the aftermath of the coup d’etat by the Egyptian military under the command of Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. As Kassem returned home to his family, an Egyptian army sniper shot and killed him, leaving a woman widowed and a child fatherless.

A Temporary Gift is a record of journal entries written by Kassem’s widow, Asmaa Hussein, during the two years following his departure from this world.

This book is about re-learning how to live in the face of immense trauma. It is a reminder that beyond the pain and darkness of loss there is still the potential of light in patience and constancy.

“A spiritually uplifting read and a story of unshakable trust in the wisdom of God in the face of adversity.” -Mohamed Soltan

“Her words remind us of just how fragile and short-lived the realities we cling to are while calling us to look through them to the only permanent truth as our true sanctuary.” -Dalia Mogahed

I haven’t ever read a book that is so enlightening in terms of patience and resilience. It takes us on journey in which we realize how Allah S.W.T is the controller of everything and He S.W.T being The Merciful would never put us in a situation that is beyond our capacity.

It is pretty rare that you find a book that is written with the kind of raw honesty that Asma Hussein has shared. She made us fall in love with her & Amr and their beautiful family life together. Then she allowed us to share a fraction of her pain on Amr’s sudden departure from this world. It takes a certain kind of bravery to share the intimacies of one’s heart and this quality makes this book truly unique. At first I thought the chapters or her journal entries seemed brief and I wanted to know more but then you feel the weight of the words & emotions & the pain – and then it seems that a lot has been expressed. What made this a powerful read is knowing that Asma is still out there living everyday with a sense of immense loss – she and her daughter are in my prayers.

This book has taught me such precious lessons that I can only just as a reader pray to Allah Almighty to reward this amazing writer for her extraordinary resilience and faith in Allah Almighty. This book has successfully imparted the gems of patience and remembrance of Allah during trials of this worldly life in me. The soulful words has delivered a beautiful legacy of writer’s husband that has empowered by belief that even a small deed is counted in the eyes of Allah. The ayahs from the Quran and the narrations of the scholar are a perfect match with the content. I am inspired by the fact that how journal writing can be a means for emerging towards a greater understanding of faith. The story made me involved to such an extent that I always spoke out “Ameen” from the core of my heart whenever I reached any Dua regarding the writer’s husband during my reading process. I sincerely hope that thousands of reviews (including mine) regarding this book are always a source relief and happiness for the writer.

I came across a excerpt of this book on a facebook page when i was in office i started dying for this book so much that i went to bookstore in my lunch break praying in my heart that i get hold of this book.I read 80 pages on very first day as i was soooo much into it already. This book is true picture of our lives as our life is a test. Our trials might be different but we can all relate to the pain and loss. The way author has related her life n pain with the Quran and hadith teachings is a very enlightening experience. I was very down but this book has helped me a lot and gave me courage to accept the life tests. I pray that Asma gets great reward and May Allah give her true happiness of heart in this life and the next life. Ameen

I have been longing to have this book (A Temporary Gift, by Asmaa Hussein) for as long as I can remember. I am eternally grateful to dawah books for restocking this piece of sheer substance.

Honest and heartfelt piece of writing. I couldn’t hold back my tears, so touched was my heart by this story of love, loss, and healing. The pain, the agony, the suffering felt like encroaching home.

What a resilient woman you are Asmaa. The voice you’ve raised to impart the message of hope and renewal uplifts one spiritually on so many levels. Standing tall in the face of adversity is an honor Allah grants to very few of His chosen slaves. And you surely are one of them.

Your words made me realize how faith, patience and prayer can help overcome the darkest despair. Your courage, grace and steadfastness is exemplary. May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala always be your guide and may He The Exalted reunite you with brother Amr in Jannah (and then there will be no parting ways) Allahumma A’meen.

JazakAllah Khayr and warmest thank you for lighting the way for those afflicted with loss. Your profound message of holding onto patience, faith and gratitude is a light that breaks through the darkest of nights.
